Matik
I was supposed to have a paw print pattern but while I let the glue dry for a bit, some of the glue ran together. This definitely was not what I wanted but due to time I had to accept the results.
SketchUp
This definitely was my least favorite assignment! I wish I was talented and could make mansions and castles but it looks like it will take a lot of practice for me to be able to do that. :)
Practicum Reflection!
I really enjoyed this lesson and I could tell that my students loved it too! This lesson went great and I could not have been happier with the results. In math earlier in the week, I taught the students about shapes. In this math lesson I only introduced plane shapes to the students so it worked well because my art lesson was based around plane shapes and different types of lines in art. The best part of my lesson was seeing students actually apply what they learned, while making different shapes with the pre-cut pieces of strips that I made for them. My mentor teacher and I were not going to teach the students about solid or 3D shapes until the next week but something great happened. The students started building different solid shapes with their strips of paper by bending and folding until it was easy for them to make a shape. This lesson not only integrated math and art, it also allowed students to challenge themselves and get ready to learn about 3D shapes. Another thing that I felt went well with this lesson was the fact that I got to help hands-on learners. This lesson is a diverse lesson that can help many students and they also enjoy it while they work on it.
Earlier in the day, before I started the lesson, I told my students that we would be doing an art project in the afternoon. Everyone got very excited and wanted to know what it was right away. Being in this classroom for a few weeks, I noticed that these first graders did not have time to do any type of art. This is when I knew integrating art into math would help change up things for them a little bit. I am done with my practicum for Level III now, and when I look back this was probably the happiest I have ever seen these kids. They were very proud of their projects, especially when I hung them out in the hall for everyone to see! I can definitely say I was very proud of my students’ work myself!
I can honestly say that this experience made me see how important it is to teach art. It also got me very excited to find different art projects to include in science, language arts, and social studies. This very lesson is one I am going to teach when I have my own classroom. The positive effect it had on the students has made me a true believer in teaching art and integrating it into the curriculum!
